The history of Château Montus Madiran

Château Montus is a vineyard located in the Madiran region, in the Hautes-Pyrénées department of France. It is known for producing full-bodied, robust red wines made from Tannat, a grape variety native to the region. The château was founded in the early 20th century by Marcel Béguignot and is now run by his family.

The vineyard covers approximately 50 hectares of vines and produces around 100,000 bottles of wine per year. Château Montus is also known for its exceptional architecture and landscape, with panoramic views of the Pyrenees.

Château Montus Madiran - Tasting notes

The miracle happened in 1985 when this wine shook up the hierarchy of legendary red wines and made a name for itself around the world with its Tannat grape variety. A pure product of the Gers region, Château Montus Madiran is nicknamed the Pétrus of the Southwest by experts and is the perfect accompaniment to all your exceptional dishes, such as duck breast. It is mainly served at room temperature (between 57°F and 61°F).

Young Château Mondus Madiran is ideal for enhancing grilled or confit meats such as lamb, beef, or duck. Once older, it is perfect with game or stews. This wine is ideal with Pyrenean cheeses such as goat, sheep, or cow's milk tommes.

The grape varieties of Château Montus Madiran

Château Montus Madiran red wine is a real treasure for lovers of complex wines. Its grape varieties are very carefully selected and its vines are old. The main grape varieties used in this wine are Tannat and Cabernet Sauvignon. The former brings a robust structure and intense aromatic richness.

Cabernet Sauvignon complements the flavors by adding finesse and elegance. The vines at Château Montus Madiran are 30 years old, which contributes to the complexity and depth of this wine. This cuvée perfectly reflects the distinctive terroir of Château Montus.

What is this wine's aging potential?

Château Montus Madiran is renowned for its excellent aging potential, thanks to its main grape variety, Tannat, known for its high tannin content and ability to age harmoniously. Depending on the vintage and storage conditions, this wine can improve in the cellar for 10 to 20 years, or even longer for exceptional years.

Over time, its tannins soften and its aromas evolve towards more complex notes of ripe fruit, sweet spices, and undergrowth. For optimal tasting, be sure to store it in a cool place, away from light and humidity.
